This brief summary does not attempt to trace the history nor the struggle of the birth of the Vancouver Traditional Latin Mass Community. Many of the founding members of the Vancouver Traditional Mass Society petitioned His Grace Archbishop James Carney, in 1989, for permission to celebrate the Tridentine Latin Mass in the Archdiocese of Vancouver.
On 23rd. May, 1989 His Grace The Most Reverend James F. Carney, DD, Archbishop of Vancouver sent us a letter informing us that he had completed arrangements with Reverend Joseph Favotto, C.S., pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in New Westminister to celebrate Mass according to the 1962 Missal. The first Mass was held on 4th. June, 1989.
Since 1989 the Mass has been continually celebrated, once a week on Sundays and sometimes on very special feasts, at Holy Spirit Parish. Since Fr. Fovotto we have had two other Parish Priests Fr. Patrick Tepoorten and Fr. George Varghese Edattukaran.
Archbishop Carney passed away in 1990 and Archbishop Adam Exner, OMI, was appointed to Vancouver in 1991. Archbishop Exner has permitted the Mass to continue and has on one occasion attended the Sunday Mass.
